Credit unions carry out our shared People Helping People philosophy in many ways, including by giving back to causes they care about. When an opportunity arises to support two important initiatives in one effort, credit unions are especially eager to lend their support.
That’s exactly what happened when the Campaign for Ending Hunger partnered with Special Olympics Maine to help facilitate a community-wide meal-packing event this spring at the Bath YMCA, focused on connecting athletes and families to healthy, nutritious food. Seven credit unions, along with the League and Synergent, raised $8,550 to sponsor the upcoming event, where volunteers will pack and distribute 10,000 meals for households across the YMCA’s 14-town service area. This effort will help strengthen the connection between nutrition, athletic performance, and overall well-being.
“Special Olympics Maine is so incredibly grateful for the support of Maine’s credit unions,” shared Grace Stults, Director of Health & Wellness at Special Olympics Maine. “Through your continued support, we are able to offer meaningful programming for athletes across the state, and with our newest collaboration, we are addressing food insecurity among our athletes, ensuring they have not only a place to play but also proper nutrition to fuel competition.”
Credit unions who supported this effort include:
- Atlantic FCU
- Ancorum CU
- Community CU
- Cumberland County FCU
- Maine Family FCU
- Maine State CU
- University CU
Beyond financial support, several other credit unions plan to volunteer at the event on May 8. If your credit union is interested in lending a hand to pack meals, please contact Jen Burke for more information.
Efforts like this highlight the impact credit unions can make when working together. Thank you to all who contributed, and to those continuing to step up and volunteer to make this event a success for these exceptional athletes.
