At a time of increased pressure on Maine’s food support networks, Brewer FCU is answering the call to help its neighbors. The credit union recently presented a donation to the Brewer Area Food Pantry, complementing its earlier community fundraising initiative and reaffirming how credit unions play a key role in addressing food insecurity in local communities.
In response to a looming reduction in assistance for recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in November, Brewer FCU President & CEO David DeFroscia announced a $1,000 donation to the Brewer Area Food Pantry.
DeFroscia explained that after hearing concern from local residents and seeing the volume of food distributions at the pantry, the credit union “wanted to get out in front of it and make a cash donation.”
Additionally, the credit union launched a non-perishable food drop-off initiative at its two local branches (running through November 14). If donations come in after the initiative is over, the credit union will ensure those items get delivered to the area pantry.
Earlier this month, Brewer FCU held its annual disc golf tournament as part of its commitment to fighting hunger in the region. The tournament was held on Saturday, October 11 at DR Disc Golf in Orrington. The event, which invited three-person teams, offered players a chance to have fun while supporting a good cause—and nearly $3,500 was raised!
By organizing a community gathering well before the SNAP support reductions took effect, Brewer FCU is demonstrating that credit unions are not only responding to crisis, but proactively engaging to ensure community needs are met year-round.
