Acadia FCU Distributes Nearly $50k to Help Feed Local Communities


Acadia FCU Madawaska Branch Manager Julie Hayes and Member Service Representative Susan Bethge presented a check for $12,181.84 to Nelson Craig, at the Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Parish Food Pantry in Madawaska. Hayes and Bethge were treated to a tour of the pantry, which serves 250 families per month with only four volunteers.

Acadia FCU recently disbursed nearly $44,000 to help feed hungry Mainers living in their communities. Food pantries and outreach programs in the St. John Valley, Ashland, and the greater Bangor-area benefited from the credit union’s 2021 Campaign for Ending Hunger fundraising efforts. An additional $5,000 in direct and in-kind donations were made throughout 2021.

“We pushed extra-hard to meet the needs of those dealing with food insecurity in Maine,” said Alison Smart, Marketing Manager at Acadia FCU. Smart also serves as the credit union’s Ending Hunger Campaign Coordinator.

The credit union’s Ending Hunger funds were was divided and sent to the following organizations:

  • First Assembly of God Food Pantry
  • St. John Vianney Parish Food Pantry
  • Aroostook Area Agency on Aging / Meals on Wheels
  • Ashland Food Pantry
  • Greater Fort Kent Ecumenical Food Pantry
  • Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Food Pantry
  • Our Lady of the Valley
  • MSAD 33 Take Home Program
  • Fish River Rural Health Food Shelf
  • Seeds of Hope Food Pantry
  • Bangor Area Homeless Shelter
  • Brewer Area Food Pantry
  • The Salvation Army of Bangor
  • Manna Ministries Food Pantry

“The ongoing pandemic, inflation, and interruptions to the food supply chain have driven up food insecurity nationwide,” added Smart. “The work we do to combat hunger in Maine provides vital aid to the communities we serve—it’s more crucial than ever.”

Fundraising efforts for Acadia FCU’s Campaign for Ending Hunger in Maine have been ongoing throughout 2022 and include a variety of activities such as popcorn sales, staff casual dress days, and bottle drives.
