On March 1, credit union advocates from across Maine descended upon the nation’s capital to be a part of the year’s premier advocacy event: America’s Credit Unions’ (ACU) Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC).
The first full day of the conference kicked off with the opening ceremony, where attendees heard from America’s Credit Unions’ new President & CEO, Scott Simpson. He took time to share personal stories about the credit union difference and the power of advocacy that he’s seen firsthand.
The morning festivities also featured a flag ceremony, with members from each state carrying their respective flags. This year, Maine’s flag was carried by the state’s two GAC crashers: Ree Anna Bridges and Grace Mix of University CU.
GAC also offered credit unions an opportunity to raise money for future advocacy efforts through the America’s Credit Unions PAC. In total, the conference raised over $315,000 for the federal PAC thanks to many generous contributions. Maine advocates did an incredible job, contributing $11,475 as of March 5. Donations from attendees in Washington, D.C., and supporters back home helped place Maine among the top 10 fundraisers nationwide.
In recognition of Maine’s strong fundraising throughout the year, we were awarded ACU’s PAC Chairman Award. This honor is given “at the discretion of the PAC Chair to a state for outstanding achievement in PAC fundraising.” League President Elise Baldacci and PAC Trustee Jason Lindstrom proudly accepted the award on Maine’s behalf.
Of course, one of the most important aspects of attending GAC is connecting with Maine’s federal delegation. Every year, the League hosts its annual congressional breakfast, where Maine’s senators and representatives are invited to speak with attendees.
Although Representatives Pingree and Golden were unable to attend the breakfast due to scheduling conflicts, Maine credit unions visited their offices on Capitol Hill the following day. The meetings provided an opportunity to speak directly with their staff about credit union priorities and share stories about the positive impact credit unions are making in their communities.
Advocacy for credit unions is a year-round effort, but the annual opportunity to come together as a united front helps strengthen our movement.
