The Maine Credit Union League and CUNA Mutual recently hosted a joint webinar on website accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Presenters Carlos Molina, Senior Risk Management Consultant, with CUNA Mutual Group, and Elise Baldacci, Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the Maine Credit Union League, provided participants an overview of the issue and outlined how credit unions and other financial institutions are becoming targets for predatory litigation.  They also provided examples of steps credit unions can and should be taking to better protect themselves from frivolous lawsuits.

If you were unable to join the webinar, you can view a recorded version of it HERE.  CUNA and CUNA Mutual have also developed several resources to help credit unions address the issue; but, we recognize that the lack of clear standards related to web accessibility makes it difficult for credit unions and other businesses to comply with the law.  That’s why CUNA and Leagues like ours across the country are calling on the Department of Justice and Congress to resolve this matter.  Until the ambiguities surrounding web access under the ADA are addressed at the federal level, credit unions will continue to remain vulnerable, which is why it is important for our credit unions to be as proactive as possible.
